Real Madrid eliminated 10-man Manchester City from the Champions League for the fourth time in five seasons, sealing a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium to complete a dominant 5-1 aggregate triumph.

Tasked with overturning a daunting 3-0 first-leg deficit against the 15-time European champions, City’s hopes faded quickly when captain Bernardo Silva was sent off early for a handball on his own goal line. Vinicius Junior calmly converted the penalty, effectively ending the tie as a contest and ensuring City’s third straight Champions League exit at Madrid’s hands.
Erling Haaland briefly reignited City’s hopes with a first-half equalizer, but Vinicius struck again in stoppage time to secure Madrid’s victory.
The defeat leaves City’s season in jeopardy. Winless in three matches, Pep Guardiola’s side now faces Arsenal in the League Cup final on Sunday. They also trail the Gunners by nine points in the Premier League and are set to host Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals next month.

Once again, City’s pursuit of European glory faltered as Madrid demonstrated their knockout-stage pedigree, despite inconsistent domestic form. Alvaro Arbeloa was able to rest Kylian Mbappe, returning from injury, and Jude Bellingham could also be fit for a likely quarter-final clash with Bayern Munich.
City needed a quick start but almost fell further behind within the opening minute. Federico Valverde, last week’s unlikely Real hero with a hat-trick, failed to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma after a surging midfield run.
City briefly threatened, only to be denied by Thibaut Courtois, who frustrated Rayan Cherki and Rodri before Madrid’s counterattack led to Silva’s dismissal and Vinicius’s decisive penalty. VAR confirmed Vinicius was onside, leaving referee Clement Turpin no choice but to send off the City captain and award the spot-kick.

Donnarumma, who had saved a Vinicius penalty in the first leg, was wrong-footed this time. Vinicius then missed two clear chances before halftime as City pushed forward and left gaps at the back.
Haaland, who now has 43 goals for club and country this season, equalized with a mishit shot from Jeremy Doku’s cross, but his recent struggles continued, and he was denied a second by Courtois’s replacement, Andriy Lunin, before being substituted ahead of the weekend’s cup final.
Both teams had goals disallowed for offside before Vinicius sealed Madrid’s win by finishing Aurelien Tchouameni’s cross deep into stoppage time.
With speculation mounting over Guardiola’s future in Manchester, City’s Champions League frustrations continue. If this proves to be his final season, a solitary European title remains a rare shortcoming in an otherwise glittering era for a club long overshadowed by their rivals, Manchester United.
