Report: South African woman gives birth to 10 babies

Gosiame Thamara Sithole, a 37-year-old woman from Gauteng in South Africa, has reportedly welcomed 10 babies at once — two more than what was revealed by ultrasound results during pregnancy.

According to IOL news site, Sithole, from Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality, gave birth to the decuplets — seven boys and three girls — through a caesarean section on Monday.

It was gathered that Sithole and Teboho Tsotetsi, her husband, were expecting eight babies, with the remaining said to have been missed during the scan due to the fact that they were tucked inside the wrong tube.Advertisement

Tsotetsi was quoted to have said that Sithole gave birth to their bundles of joy 29 weeks into her pregnancy, adding that her conception was natural as she was not on any fertility treatment.

“It is seven boys and three girls. She was seven months and seven days pregnant. I am happy. I am emotional. I can’t talk much,” he was quoted to have said.

The couple already had six-year-old twins before welcoming the babies.Advertisement

With the development, Sithole is said to have broken the Guinness Record for the most children birthed by one woman at once.

The multi-birth is yet to be confirmed by South African government

On Tuesday, the country’s government said it was unable to verify if a Gauteng couple indeed had 10 children as was reported.

Phumla Williams, the director-general of South African government communications, took to Twitter to ask for more information.

We have spent a better part of today tracing the story of @IOL of a woman having given birth to 10 babies! @IOL can you please help the public where this birth happened!

On his part, Mzwandile Masina, executive mayor of the city of Ekurhuleni, said attempts to locate the couple proved abortive.

y office & our Dept. of Social Dev. have been searching for the family who allegedly gave birth to 10 kids today. Apparently they from Tembisa & we wanted to assist as a city. Can @IOL provide some info on this story? Or has mainstream media degenerated to a fake news factory?

The development comes one month after Halima Cisse, a 25-year-old woman from Mali, gave birth to nonuplets — four boys and five girls — through caesarean section in Morocco.
