Senegal’s national football team coach, Pape Thiaw, has been dismissed from his position following the team’s elimination in the last-32 stage of the World Cup, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced on Sunday.
In an official statement, the FSF revealed that its executive committee had convened and decided to initiate the process of removing Thiaw and his entire coaching staff from their roles. The federation added that FSF president Abdoulaye Fall will address the media in a press conference on Monday to explain the rationale behind the decision and outline the path forward for Senegalese football.
Thiaw, 45, a former Senegal international, was appointed as head coach in 2024. Despite guiding Senegal to an Africa Cup of Nations title in January, which was later revoked after the team walked off during a chaotic final against Morocco, his World Cup campaign fell short of expectations.
At the World Cup, the Lions of Teranga suffered group-stage defeats to France and Norway, but a resounding 5–0 win against Iraq earned them a spot in the knockout rounds. However, they were eliminated by Belgium in the round of 32, losing 3–2 after extra time despite leading 2–0 until the 86th minute.
