These Floridians thought they could swim through Hurricane Ian… but they were wrong!

While most of the state of Florida found shelter or left the area ahead of Hurricane Ian hitting the shoreline, there were some who decided to put their lives at risk by going for a swim through the massive waves that the storm was causing.

Several videos have appeared on social media of Floridians who thought they could swim through Hurricane Ian, but who were quickly proved wrong.

One video showed swimmers getting thrown about by waves near a pier in Fort Meyers, an area where residents had been told evacuate.

Local journalists shared these videos along with warnings about how dangerous this was and about how many problems it could cause the emergency services.

“Do not do this, people are swimming on Fort Myers Beach by the pier and I can’t stress enough how dangerous this is,” said NBC’s Brenna Weick, for example.

Another Floridian who took to the sea during Hurricane Ian

On Tuesday, there was similar shock as one man shared a video in which he was seen trying to steer his boat through the thrashing waves.

“I had to make sure that my floating home made it unharmed,” that Miami resident said.

How bad is Hurricane Ian?

This reckless behaviour caused such criticism because Hurricane Ian could be one of the worst storms to impact Florida.

It has already knocked out power and there is more than a foot of rainfall in some areas.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis has asked president Joe Biden to approve a major disaster declaration for all of the 67 counties in the state of Florida.

He also wants FEMA to pay for the costs associated with debris removal and other emergency protective measures, at least for the first 60 days of this natural disaster.

It isn’t over yet, but in the meantime the Florida authorities are urging people to remain indoors and in safe spaces if they haven’t evacuated yet. And certainly not to take to the piers to go for a swim.
