Johnny Drille, the Nigerian alternate singer, has dropped the performance visuals for ‘Driving in the Rain’, a track off ‘Before We Fall Asleep’, his debut album.
The video, which features Ladipoe, adopts an unconventional concept of visualisation different from the usual approach amongst Nigerian artistes.
The less than three-minute music video sees Johnny Drille and Ladipoe performing the song to the camera in one take as they cruise around in a black SUV.
This break from convention is in contrast with the scripted, multiple angled videos that is the norm of the Nigerian music scene.
The track is the second time the Mavin duo will be collaborating in 2021. They dropped ‘Hold On,’ a sample track of Drake’s hit classic song ‘Hold On We Going Home’, earlier in the year.
‘Driving in the Rain’ is a low tempo tune that blends the calming voice of Drille with the punchlines of Ladipoe for a brilliant effect.
“Wanna see you everyday/ I wanna see you everyday/ I wanna be your hang on/ I’ll take you there loke loke/ I am on my way driving in the goddamn rain/ I’m driving in the goddamn,” Johny Drille sing in the chorus.
Drille started his journey in the music scene when he featured as a contestant on the sixth season of Project Fame West Africa in 2013.
In 2015, he came through with a cover of ‘Awww’ by Dija, the Nigerian singer, who later became a label mate.
His unique sound caught the attention of Don Jazzy, CEO of Mavin Records, and he signed with the foremost record label in 2017.
The 31-year-old singer has since then released numerous singles that turned out to be successful with massive reception.
In 2019, he snagged ‘Best Alternative Song’ at the 2019 edition of The Headies.
