Bayer Leverkusen’s hopes of retaining the DFB-Pokal ended in shocking fashion as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to third-tier side Arminia Bielefeld in the semi-finals. Xabi Alonso’s men, who were heavy favorites, took an early lead through Jonathan Tah (17’) but found themselves trailing by halftime after a stunning comeback from the underdogs.
Despite dominating possession, Leverkusen failed to break down Bielefeld’s defense in the second half and were nearly punished further as Joel Grodowski missed a golden chance to extend the lead. Home fans stormed the pitch at full-time, celebrating one of the biggest upsets in recent German Cup history.
This latest defeat means Leverkusen could end the season without silverware, having already been knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich. They now trail Bayern by six points in the Bundesliga with just seven games remaining, leaving their title defense hanging by a thread.
