Messi May Miss More MLS Games as Mascherano Prioritizes Rest Over Risk

Inter Miami fans and Major League Soccer supporters across the U.S. may have to brace for more Lionel Messi no shows, as head coach Javier Mascherano continues to stress the importance of managing the superstar’s fitness.

Despite starting three consecutive matches recently, Messi could once again be rested ahead of the Herons’ trip to face the Chicago Fire, a club whose fans have already been disappointed by Messi absences in each of the past two seasons.

Mascherano, speaking about the decision-making process behind starting the club’s elite veterans Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets made it clear that 100% fitness is a non-negotiable standard.

“If they are feeling fine, they will play. By feeling fine, I mean 100 per cent physically and mentally,” Mascherano said. “If any of them are not, they will rest.”

Mascherano acknowledged the pressure to feature “The Big Four” but insisted that team chemistry and long-term results take priority over public demand:

“We want to manage the load but also use them as much as possible. They bring leadership and help us with results.”

Messi, who is recovering from minor muscle complaints, has missed a handful of games this season including for both MLS and Argentina’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Still, Inter Miami remain undefeated in their MLS Cup bid and have advanced to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Despite the caution, there’s optimism for fans: Messi is expected to extend his contract with Inter Miami through 2026, meaning more chances to catch the legend live just not every match.
