Nigerian-born footballer Ime Okon has been named in South Africa’s provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), PM news has scooped.
The young defender, who has continued to impress with his performances, was one of 54 players shortlisted by head coach Hugo Broos as the team begins preparations for the tournament.
Broos will later reduce the list to 24 players who will eventually represent South Africa at the competition.
This long initial list gives the technical crew enough room to assess players’ fitness, form, and readiness before making the final decision.
Okon, aged 21, was born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother. Despite his Nigerian roots, he chose to represent South Africa at international level and has already made five appearances for Bafana Bafana.
His steady rise has earned him praise from fans and football analysts who believe he has a bright future.
According to the South African Football Association (SAFA), the final squad will be released soon as the technical team finalises its evaluation of all 54 invited players.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has given all participating countries until December 11 to submit their final squad lists.
This deadline ensures that all teams are adequately prepared ahead of the tournament.
AFCON 2025 is expected to be highly competitive, and South Africa hopes to present a strong team capable of challenging for the title.
Okon’s inclusion highlights the confidence the coaching staff has in his ability and potential to contribute to the team’s success.
