Italy Fails to Qualify for Third Consecutive World Cup After Penalty Shoot-Out Loss to Bosnia

Italy’s hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup were dashed after a dramatic qualification play-off final defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday. The Azzurri fell short of securing a spot at this summer’s tournament in North America, losing 4-1 on penalties after a tense contest in Zenica.

Esmir Bajraktarevic converted the decisive penalty, sealing Bosnia’s place in Group B, where they will face co-hosts Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar. The result plunged Italy into further disappointment, marking another chapter in their recent World Cup struggles.

Italy, four-time world champions, had taken an early lead through Moise Kean in the 15th minute but were forced to play with ten men for more than half the match after Alessandro Bastoni was sent off for a foul on Amar Memic just before halftime. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Italy held on until the 79th minute, when Haris Tabakovic scored Bosnia’s equalizer, sending the match into extra time.

In the penalty shootout, Italy’s woes continued. Pio Esposito missed their opening spot-kick, firing over the bar, and Bryan Cristante struck the woodwork. Bajraktarevic then slotted his effort past Gianluigi Donnarumma, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.

With this defeat, Italy become the first former World Cup winners to miss three consecutive tournaments. Bosnia, meanwhile, celebrated reaching their second-ever World Cup finals—and their first since 2014—thanks to Bajraktarevic’s winning penalty in front of a jubilant Zenica crowd.
