Ed Sheeran, the Grammy-winning British singer-songwriter, has addressed the growing controversy surrounding his ongoing ‘Loop’ tour, breaking his silence amid the withdrawal of several artists and raising concerns about censorship.
The uproar began earlier this month when rapper Macklemore was removed from the tour following pro-Palestinian remarks made during a show at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. During his performance, Macklemore declared “Free Palestine!” and assured Palestinians they were “not forgotten.
In the aftermath, American artist Finneas, Irish singer Aaron Rowe, Irish folk group Beoga, and Danish pop band Lukas Graham all announced their departures from the tour.
Speaking at the opening concert, Sheeran reflected on the backlash. “I’m used to my music being criticised. But this time, the criticism is about something far more important,” he said. “I don’t want to let down my fans. I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician.”
Visibly emotional on stage, Sheeran also expressed concern over increasing demands by venues to pre-approve performers’ content. “I am deeply worried about the idea that venues should pre-approve what artists say.
I’ve encountered this in many places I’ve performed around the world, but it should never happen in a free society.
Sheeran addressed the conflict directly: “What happened in Israel and at the Nova music festival on October 7 was horrific, compounding centuries of Jewish pain. What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate.”
Amid the controversy, Sheeran revealed that many people advised him to cancel the tour and that the ordeal had shown him who his true friends are.
It all happened so fast. People I’ve known for years have distanced themselves. In the back of my mind, I saw ticket sales for this show people weren’t cancelling, they were buying tickets. Despite everyone telling me to cancel, I felt my friends and family step away.”
Meanwhile, Macklemore announced he would donate his entire $1 million net earnings from the ‘Loop’ tour to organizations supporting Palestinians.
