Breaking: Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh concedes defeat

(FILES)-- A file photo taken on November 22, 2011 shows Gambian President Yahya Jammeh greets supporters during a rally in Gambia. A military coup bid in the small west African state of The Gambia was foiled early on December 30, 2014, while President Yahya Jammeh was abroad, military and diplomatic sources said. "Members of the Gambian armed forces have been involved in serious (gunfire) around 3:00 am. They wanted to overthrow the regime," a military source said, while a Western diplomat said that presidential guard troops were among forces who attacked Jammeh's palace. AFP PHOTO / SEYLLOU

President Yahya Jammeh, who has ruled The Gambia for 22 years, has conceded defeat to opposition leader Adama Barrow, the chairman of the electoral commission said on Friday.

“It’s really unique that someone who has been ruling this country for so long has accepted defeat,” Alieu Momar Njie told reporters.
