Popular Nigerian comedian Ali Baba recently discussed the rising trend of Nigerians seeking to emigrate, often referred to as ‘Japa,’ during an appearance on the Outside The Box podcast. According to Ali Baba, frustrations with Nigeria’s infrastructure, security concerns, and financial burdens are the driving forces behind many people’s decision to look for opportunities abroad.
Ali Baba shared the story of a friend, an assistant general manager at a bank, who faced enormous monthly expenses, including approximately ₦130,000 for fuel and ₦1 million for diesel for electricity. These costs, along with the burden of education, security, and housing, amounted to a staggering ₦22 to ₦23 million every quarter.
The comedian pointed out that such expenses make it difficult for Nigerians to consider the possibility of owning property overseas. “If I convert this, can I be doing it as a mortgage to a house I have overseas?” he questioned, highlighting the financial contrast between living in Nigeria and abroad.
He also emphasized how life outside Nigeria differs, noting that children abroad often attend public schools with reliable transportation, significantly lowering educational expenses. “What is the security for children? Will anybody kidnap two of his children and come and say bring money? No,” Ali Baba added, contrasting the safety abroad with the frequent security concerns in Nigeria.
Furthermore, Ali Baba pointed out that overseas, there is less reliance on personal security measures and domestic staff due to better public services. The comedian also highlighted that kidnappings and police harassment are less prevalent abroad, and graduates typically have better job prospects in those countries compared to Nigeria.
