Premier League rivals Chelsea and Arsenal are set to go head-to-head for the signing of Porto forward Samu Aghehowain the upcoming summer transfer window.
Chelsea Reignite Interest Amid Arsenal’s Pursuit
The 20-year-old Spanish striker was strongly linked with a move to Chelsea from Atletico Madrid last summer, but the deal fell through, leading him to join Porto instead. Since then, Aghehowa has flourished in Portugal, scoring 19 goals and providing three assists in 31 appearances across all competitions.
His impressive form includes 13 goals and three assists in 19 league games, along with six goals in nine Europa League appearances, including a brace against Manchester United earlier in the competition.
According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea are keen to reignite their pursuit of Aghehowa, but Arsenal have now emerged as serious contenders, with Mikel Arteta looking for a new striker to bolster his attack next season.
Transfer Fee and Competition for Aghehowa
Despite Aghehowa’s €100m (£82.5m) release clause at Porto, both Chelsea and Arsenal reportedly believe they could secure his services for around €50m (£41m).
Aston Villa and West Ham United are also monitoring the situation, but Chelsea and Arsenal are seen as the frontrunners in the race for the highly-rated forward.
A Difficult Past and a Bright Future
Aghehowa’s rise to prominence follows a challenging period at Atletico Madrid, where he struggled for game time and was eventually loaned out to Alavés, scoring eight goals in La Liga.
Reflecting on his failed Chelsea move last summer, the youngster admitted to EFE that it was “a very difficult summer” filled with uncertainty and emotional turmoil.
“When I was in Madrid, I had a very bad time. In the end, thank God, everything turned out well. If the Chelsea deal didn’t work out, it was for a reason.”
Now, with his career back on track, Aghehowa is not only a key player for Porto but also a rising star for the Spanish national team, with Spain reportedly seeing him as an important part of their plans moving forward.
What’s Next?
As the summer transfer window approaches, Chelsea and Arsenal are expected to intensify their pursuit of Aghehowa. With both clubs in need of a reliable goal scorer, the race for his signature could turn into one of the most intriguing transfer battles of 2025.
