Court Orders Expedited Trial in Coup Plot Case; Tribunal to Resume in May

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered an expedited trial for six individuals accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government. The court, presided over by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, invoked a speedy trial procedure and scheduled hearings for April 29, April 30, May 4, and May 5 to begin the trial and address bail applications.

The accused include retired Major-General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, retired Navy Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor, Police Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Presidential Villa electrician Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Kashim Goni, and Islamic cleric Abdulkadir Sani from Zaria. They face a 13-count indictment on charges of treason, terrorism, failure to disclose information, and money laundering. All have pleaded not guilty.

A related court-martial for serving military officers implicated in the alleged coup is also slated to resume on May 8, according to the Defence Headquarters. Thirty-six officers are facing disciplinary proceedings under military law, separate from the civilian trial.

During Monday’s session, the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), informed the court that prosecution witnesses were prepared to testify. The defense requested that bail applications be heard, but Justice Abdulmalik ruled that the trial would begin before considering bail. Some defense lawyers objected to the tight schedule, citing the complexity of the case and short notice, but the judge urged all parties to agree on suitable dates for a swift trial.

Journalists were barred from covering the proceedings, with court officials and Department of State Services (DSS) operatives ordering reporters to leave the courtroom before the judge arrived. The press had arrived early but left shortly after Justice Abdulmalik took her seat.

The defendants were arraigned the previous Wednesday on charges including conspiracy to stage a coup in 2025, an offense punishable under Section 37(2) of the Criminal Code. They remain in DSS custody following an earlier court order.

Authorities say the dual-track proceedings—civilian and military—highlight the scope of the alleged plot, which is believed to involve both current and retired military personnel as well as civilians. Former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva, named in several counts but not charged, remains at large. Reports indicate that at least 40 people have been arrested in connection with the case.
