Gary Neville Slams ‘Robotic and Micromanaged’ Players After Drab Manchester Derby Stalemate

Gary Neville did not hold back in his criticism of the players following the goalless draw between Manchester United and Manchester City in the latest Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

The former United defender and Sky Sports pundit called out both teams for their lackluster performance, questioning the players’ attitude after the match. He described them as “robotic” and “micromanaged,” and expressed his disappointment with the game’s dull 0-0 finish.

Neville’s Passionate Rant

In a candid rant on Sky Sports following the game, Neville said: “I don’t think there was one player who walked off the pitch disappointed about drawing the game 0-0, from either side. I think they all sort of walked off thinking: ‘We’re okay here, we got away without making a mistake’. It was really disappointing.”

Neville went on to describe the performance as “drab,” adding, “I apologize for my co-commentary, I think I let it get to me, I was boring on there as well. That was drab.”

A Critique of Modern Football’s Robotic Nature

The former United captain highlighted how both teams seemed to play without a spark, criticizing the modern football trend of micromanagement. He said: “This robotic nature of not leaving our positions, being micromanaged within an inch of our lives, not having any freedom to take a risk to go and try and win a football match is becoming an illness in the game, it’s becoming a disease in the game.”

Neville also drew comparisons with Pep Guardiola’s style, suggesting that the current iteration of Guardiola’s tactics was being poorly imitated by teams across Europe. “United’s goalkeeper rolling his foot on the ball and waiting for things to happen. That’s not it. That’s not what this club is and not what we do here. Liverpool don’t do that.”

Focus Shifts to Europe for Amorim’s Side

With the Manchester derby behind them, both clubs will now shift their attention to their upcoming challenges. For Ruben Amorim’s Sporting CP, the next focus is their Europa League quarter-final tie with Lyon, with the first leg scheduled for Thursday in France.
