Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy is under fire online after a video surfaced showing him chilling with Seyi Tinubu, son of Nigeria’s President, alongside basketball legend Michael Jordan.
While many fans admired the iconic meetup with Jordan, it was Burna Boy’s presence with Seyi Tinubu that sparked outrage, especially given Burna’s history of singing against oppression, economic hardship, and bad governance.
The clip comes at a sensitive time rapper Eedris Abdulkareem recently clashed with Seyi Tinubu, following the latter’s comment describing his father as “the best president.” Eedris responded with a diss track titled “Tell Your Papa”, fueling more tension online.
Netizens didn’t hold back their reactions:
- @folajimi033: “Some of una artist dn craze teh teh dem no go ever practise wettin dem dey preach.”
- @miracle__kay: “Seyi go be like, I am the president son allegedly.”
- @boy.jay__: “Hypocrisy at its peak.”
- @shiretwin: “😂 That’s all I can say. If una like make una no japa go make money, stay there dey sing ‘Seyi tell your papa.’”
- @mr.horlic: “Country dey spoil, papa go France to see native doctor, son dey Paris dey enjoy. Me I dey Mbaise dey find job.”
- @chinedumuka: “Burnaboy just wants fame. He doesn’t care about this country.”
While Burna Boy has not responded to the backlash, fans are now questioning the sincerity behind his activist lyrics is he still the voice of the people, or has fame blurred the lines?
One thing is clear: the streets are watching.
