The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced the payment of the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each player of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, as part of the Presidential Reward for their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
Each team official also received the naira equivalent of $50,000. The commission confirmed that all players and officials had their accounts credited on September 9, 2026, and have acknowledged receipt of the funds.
D’Tigress secured the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title for a record fifth consecutive time and seventh overall—in 2025. According to the NSC, these payments complete the full package of rewards promised to the team by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement signed by Kehinde Ajayi, Director of Information and Public Relations, the NSC listed the Presidential Rewards as including a three-bedroom flat in Abuja, a national honour of Order of the Niger (OON), and the cash payments.
“With the payment, the entire Presidential Rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR—comprising a 3-bedroom flat in Abuja, national honours of OON, and the naira equivalent of $100,000 for players and $50,000 for officials—have been fully redeemed and completed,” the statement read.
The NSC recalled that players and officials had already received title documents for their apartments and national honour certificates in February 2026, during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France. The documents were signed by President Tinubu. The cash payment followed the team’s participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The commission also disclosed that the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, who were also promised Presidential Rewards, had received their title documents and national honour certificates during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July and August 2026. The cash component of their reward, identical to that of D’Tigress—naira equivalent of $100,000 per player and $50,000 per official—is expected to be paid before their next official matches.
The NSC emphasized that these rewards are part of the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of Nigerian athletes. “This unprecedented recognition by the Federal Government of Nigeria aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR’s Renewed Hope initiative and Shared Prosperity agenda, which place athletes’ welfare and appropriate rewards as top priorities,” the statement said.
