“I’m Not the Producer’s Favourite” — Chimezie Imo Opens Up on Being Misunderstood in Nollywood

Rising Nollywood star Chimezie Imo is speaking his truth — and it’s both raw and refreshing.

In a heartfelt chat with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the Breath of Life actor revealed how being outspoken on set has shaped how he’s viewed in the industry, often painting him as “problematic” despite his good intentions.

“I’m very vocal, so I always feel people think I’m problematic. I fight for people and I think I need to stop that because it has put me into trouble.”

Imo recalled a moment of unexpected recognition when a director of MTV’s Shuga refused to shoot unless he was part of the cast — a moment that genuinely shocked him.

“I always think people think I’m problematic, so when I hear people say good things about me, I’m surprised.”

Known for speaking out when he sees unfair treatment, even when it doesn’t concern him directly, Imo confessed that his stance hasn’t always won him favors with producers.

“When I see someone being disrespected, I don’t know how to let it go. Maybe because they don’t have a voice. For example, if I’m a lead and a sub-lead is eating less than me, I’m asking why.”

Despite the backlash, the actor says he’s often the director’s favourite — a testament to his dedication to the craft, even if it ruffles feathers behind the scenes.

“I’m not the producer’s favourite, but I’m the director’s favourite.”
