Mamelodi Sundowns, the last African team standing in the Club World Cup, bows out of the tournament prematurely.

Africa’s aspirations for Club World Cup success faced a heartbreaking setback as South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns were eliminated in the group stage, held to a goalless draw by the Brazilian powerhouse Fluminense.

Despite their relentless efforts, the Sundowns could not find the crucial goal, with the match’s tension escalating dramatically in the second half.

Officiated by English referee Anthony Taylor, the clash was a fierce battle from the outset. Both teams had opportunities to seize the moment, but a combination of tenacious defending and squandered chances dominated the evening.

The Sundowns came close several times during the first half, with Divine Lunga and Tashreeq Matthews testing Fluminense’s goalkeeper Fabio, who delivered a breathtaking save early on, stopping what seemed to be a sure goal. In the second half, the South Africans retained possession and seized momentum, yet Fluminense’s defense stood resolute.

Tempers flared late in the game, resulting in yellow cards for both sides, with players like Kutlwano Lethlaku and Teboho Mokoena cautioned for their robust challenges.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso made strategic substitutions, bringing on Peter Shalulile and Arthur Sales in a quest for a breakthrough, but Fluminense’s solid defense remained unyielding. As the final whistle approached, an additional eight minutes were added, amplifying the suspense in the stadium. Yet, despite a flurry of attacks and last-minute corners, the Brazilian side managed to defend their goal.

Though the match ended in a stalemate, it was enough to propel Fluminense forward, ending Africa’s journey in the tournament and leaving Sundowns and their dedicated supporters heartbroken. This outcome underscores another disheartening chapter for African clubs in the FIFA Club World Cup, as Mamelodi Sundowns’ valiant effort fell just short of overturning the continent’s long-standing struggle on the global stage.
