Manchester City have emerged as favourites to secure the signature of Florian Wirtz, the highly coveted midfielder from Bayer Leverkusen.
According to Give Me Sport, City’s pursuit of the 21-year-old German international has gathered momentum, particularly as they are looking to find a direct replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, who is set to leave the club this summer as a free agent.
City’s Key Advantage in the Transfer Battle
Although Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are also interested in Wirtz, Manchester City appear to have a significant edge in the transfer race. Leverkusen is reportedly reluctant to sell their prized asset to a direct rival, particularly one that could bolster their midfield options in the same competition. This hesitation plays into City’s hands, as the club remains optimistic about securing the player’s signature.
Potential Transfer Fee
Leverkusen, under pressure to capitalize on Wirtz’s value before his contract situation becomes a factor, are expected to demand a fee in the region of £100 million (approximately $128 million). The midfielder’s talent and potential make him one of the most sought-after young players in Europe.
Competition from Other Top Clubs
Despite City’s lead, Wirtz faces stiff competition from other top European clubs, with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid also tracking the player. Real Madrid, in particular, have a vested interest as Xabi Alonso, the current Leverkusen manager, has been linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu next season. Should Alonso make the move, Los Blancos will likely hope he can convince Wirtz to join him in Spain.
Wirtz’s Current Injury Status
However, the transfer pursuit may face a brief delay as Wirtz is currently sidelined due to a ligament injury in his right ankle, which he sustained during a Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen last month. The injury is expected to keep him out for several weeks, but that hasn’t deterred clubs from continuing their interest in the talented midfielder.
