Morocco advanced to the World Cup last 16 after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over the Netherlands in Monterrey on Monday, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
The tension-filled encounter was ultimately decided when Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved the Netherlands’ fifth penalty from Crysencio Summerville. Ismael Saibari then confidently fired home the decisive spot-kick, clinching a 3-2 shootout win for Morocco and setting up a last-16 showdown with Canada in Houston on Saturday.
The match itself was a gripping affair. The Dutch had taken the lead midway through the second half through Cody Gakpo, who found the net just days after he and his partner suffered the heartbreak of losing their unborn child. Gakpo fell to the ground, overcome with emotion, as his teammates gathered to console him.
As the Netherlands looked set for victory, Morocco struck back in stoppage time. Issa Diop rose unmarked to head in substitute Chemsdine Talbi’s cross, sending the game into extra time amid jubilant scenes.
Morocco had created the better chances in a fiercely contested match, with both sides committing to aggressive tackles that tested the patience of Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio. Early chances saw Neil al-Aynaoui’s header from an Achraf Hakimi corner brilliantly saved by Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen, who soon after tipped a powerful Hakimi shot over the bar.
The physical battles continued, with Ismael Saibari lucky to escape punishment for an elbow on Jan Paul van Hecke. The Netherlands controlled possession for long spells but found clear chances hard to come by. Their best first-half effort came when Micky van de Ven unleashed a thunderous shot that Bounou pushed over the bar. Van Hecke, bloodied from a penalty area collision, made a crunching tackle on el-Aynaoui just before halftime, underlining the contest’s intensity.
The second half brought more drama, especially after a tactical reshuffle by Dutch coach Ronald Koeman, whose substitutions included Wout Weghorst. The striker’s flick sent Summerville through on goal, and his cross was met by Gakpo for the opener.
Morocco responded strongly, and almost broke through in extra time when Soufiane Rahimi was denied by a spectacular Verbruggen save. The match went to penalties, and although Morocco’s El-Aynaoui missed their first attempt, the Atlas Lions rallied to secure a famous victory.
