Ruben Amorim may be ready to bench Andre Onana for Manchester United’s upcoming match against Newcastle, with Altay Bayindir poised to step in as the starting goalkeeper at St. James’ Park.
Onana’s position is under scrutiny following a poor performance during United’s 2-1 loss to Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter final. The Cameroonian goalkeeper was blamed for both goals, leading to growing concerns about his recent form.
Reports suggest Amorim is contemplating a change, with Bayindir, the backup keeper, possibly being called up to replace Onana for the crucial Premier League match. Although Amorim publicly backed his number one goalkeeper after the Lyon loss, the manager may be opting to shield Onana from further criticism by giving Bayindir a chance to start.
Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has been critical of Onana’s performances, stating, “There are so many issues that Ruben Amorim needs to sort out. I would be very uncomfortable pointing to one player, but it’s not great to watch. You never feel safe. You never feel like going 2-1 up… you always fear the other team will come back.”
Mike Phelan, Sir Alex Ferguson’s long-time assistant, has also weighed in, suggesting it might be time for a change: “That’s the biggest decision as a manager you have to make. Is there a No. 2 goalkeeper at United capable of taking the No. 1 role for the rest of the season? You can’t keep covering up those mistakes.”
After their tough match against Newcastle, United will face Lyon again in the second leg of their Europa League tie, making the goalkeeper decision even more critical for the Red Devils.
