Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 34.
Over the course of his distinguished career with the national team, Mendy earned 60 caps and played a pivotal role in Senegal’s footballing achievements.
His most notable contribution came in 2021, when he helped Senegal secure their historic first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title a milestone regarded as one of the greatest moments in the country’s sporting history.
Renowned as one of Africa’s premier goalkeepers, Mendy’s influence extended beyond that landmark victory. He has consistently been recognized for his outstanding performances, both for club and country. Notably, he has been nominated for the 2026 Yashin Trophy, which honors the world’s best goalkeeper.
Mendy’s retirement comes at a complex time for Senegalese football, with the country’s 2025 AFCON title currently under appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded the championship to Morocco.
As he steps away from the international stage, Mendy will now turn his attention fully to his club career, closing a remarkable chapter with the Senegal national team.
