Liverpool Linked with Shock Move for Everton Defender Amid Van Dijk Uncertainty

Liverpool could make a stunning move for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite if Virgil van Dijk departs Anfield this summer, according to former Reds midfielder Didi Hamann.

With speculation growing over Van Dijk’s long-term future, Liverpool face a crucial decision regarding their defensive structure. The Dutch centre-back’s contract situation remains unclear, and while the club is keen to extend his stay, he has hinted at uncertainty over his future.

Hamann: “Van Dijk Is Liverpool’s Priority”

Speaking to CardPlayer.com, Hamann emphasized the importance of keeping Van Dijk, describing him as the backbone of Liverpool’s defense.

“Keeping Virgil van Dijk has to be the priority for Liverpool. He stabilizes everything and makes other players better. He’s just a rock at the back.”

However, Hamann acknowledged the lack of clarity regarding contract negotiations. With key players like Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold also approaching the final months of their deals, questions have been raised about Liverpool’s approach to renewals and squad planning.

“It’s a bizarre situation because we don’t know whether he’s been offered a contract or whether he’s holding out for more money. If these players haven’t been offered contracts, it’s very strange.”

Liverpool Eye Branthwaite as a Potential Successor

Amid the uncertainty, Hamann suggested that Liverpool could look to Everton’s highly-rated centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite as a possible long-term replacement for Van Dijk.

“It’s been a while since someone moved directly between Everton and Liverpool, but the gap between the two clubs is big right now. If Branthwaite wanted to go, Everton fans might understand.”

Branthwaite, one of the Premier League’s brightest young defenders, has been a standout performer for Everton this season, attracting interest from several top clubs.

Merseyside Derby Adds More Intrigue

Liverpool remain 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League with just nine games to go. Their next match? A high-stakes Merseyside derby against Everton on April 2, which could take on extra significance with Branthwaite’s future and Van Dijk’s contract talks in the spotlight.
