Atletico Madrid advanced to the Champions League semi-finals with a 3-2 aggregate win over Barcelona, despite losing 2-1 in Tuesday’s dramatic quarter-final second leg.
Barcelona made a flying start at the Metropolitano, with Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres putting the visitors two goals up within 24 minutes, wiping out Atletico’s 2-0 first-leg advantage. However, Ademola Lookman pulled a goal back for Atletico, restoring their aggregate lead in a tense all-Spanish showdown.
The hosts, guided by Diego Simeone, reached the last four for the first time since 2017 by holding their nerve in a fiercely contested encounter. Barcelona’s hopes suffered a late blow when defender Eric Garcia was sent off for fouling Alexander Sorloth as he bore down on goal, leaving the Catalans a man short in their pursuit of a third goal to force extra time.
Atletico, still seeking their first Champions League title after finishing runners-up in 2014 and 2016 under Simeone, will now meet either Arsenal or Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals.
We’re very happy, knocking out a great Barca side. We had a great game away. It was really hard for us at the start (of this one), but the team knew how to get back on its feet, Atletico captain Koke told Movistar.
Barcelona’s quest for a sixth European crown will continue, with their last Champions League triumph dating back to 2015. Despite the disappointment, midfielder Frenkie de Jong remained optimistic: “I think we had a very good game, we gave our lives out there, we tried everything. I feel like luck was not on our side. We have to continue — we’re on a good path, we’re growing every year.
Barca manager Hansi Flick opted to start Ferran Torres and Gavi over Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski, aiming for relentless pressing in the sixth meeting between these teams this season. The visitors started brightly, with Yamal forcing an early save from Juan Musso before netting the opener after just four minutes, capitalizing on an error by Clement Lenglet.
Torres doubled Barcelona’s lead in the 24th minute, finishing smartly after being picked out by Dani Olmo. Fermin Lopez nearly added a third, only to be denied by Musso, who also left Lopez bloodied after an accidental clash.
Atletico responded in the 31st minute, as Marcos Llorente exploited Barcelona’s high defensive line and set up Lookman to finish. The second half was no less intense: Torres had a goal ruled out for offside, and Flick introduced Rashford and Lewandowski in a desperate bid for another goal. Atletico’s Robin Le Normand almost equalized on the night, but was denied by Barca’s Joan Garcia.
Tensions flared as Gavi’s elbow left Matteo Ruggieri bloodied, and Barcelona’s task became even harder when Eric Garcia was shown red for bringing down Sorloth, echoing Pau Cubarsi’s dismissal in the first leg. Flick pushed centre-back Ronald Araujo forward in the closing stages, but Atletico held firm through eight tense minutes of stoppage time to clinch victory and spark jubilant celebrations.
