Seun Kuti: My mother once hid cannabis inside a loaf of bread and asked me to deliver it to Fela while he was in prison

Seun Kuti has shared a memorable story about his late mother, Fehintola, who once concealed cannabis inside a loaf of bread and sent him to deliver it to his father, the legendary Fela Kuti, during a period of detention.

In a recent interview, Seun recounted that Fela was being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Lagos, at the time.

He explained that, as a child, he was unaware he was transporting contraband to his father. We were visiting my dad at Panti, and my mum bought bread for him. She hid Igbo inside the bread and told me to give it to him when we arrived, he recalled.

Seun, who was about eight or nine years old at the time, described his parents as such gangsters. He said, I didn’t even know what was happening. I just handed the bread to my dad.

On their way home, Seun’s sister revealed that she knew about the cannabis in the bread because their mother had confided in her, but not in Seun, fearing he might accidentally alert the police.

Seun, 45, further noted that he visited his father in several detention facilities during his childhood.

I’ve been to see my father in many places. I remember visiting him at Ikoyi Prison, Kirikiri Prison, Panti, and Alagbon, he said.
