According to eyewitness accounts gathered at the scene on Wednesday, the accident occurred around 5 p.m. when an unidentified motorist collided with the rider and immediately fled. By the time our correspondents arrived, the victim’s body had been moved from the middle of the road to the sidewalk and covered with a cloth by residents and sympathisers.

Several dispatch riders gathered at the scene, expressing frustration over persistent regulatory lapses and the increasing recklessness of motorists on the expressway.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as sudden and tragic. One witness, identified as Mr. Michael, recounted that two residents quickly moved the victim’s body to prevent further accidents. “When I arrived, the body had already been carried off the road. I spoke to a vulcaniser nearby who explained that after the collision, the driver sped off immediately,” he said. Attempts to pursue the fleeing driver were unsuccessful due to a lack of available transportation at the time.

Another dispatch rider, who preferred to remain anonymous, decried the frequent disregard for traffic rules and the delays in emergency response on the expressway.

A police officer at the scene, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the family of the deceased had been contacted. “We used the victim’s phone to reach his family, and they are on their way. The body has already been removed from the expressway,” the officer stated, adding that they were awaiting the family’s arrival to move the body to the mortuary.

As of the time our correspondents left the scene, the victim’s family had not yet arrived. Both the Federal Road Safety Corps and the police were yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
