Katsina State was plunged into mourning on Tuesday after the tragic passing of Katsina United Football Club midfielder, Chinedu Ozor.
Ozor collapsed during a pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes FC at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium and, despite being rushed to K-Dara Specialist Hospital, was pronounced dead in the early hours of August 11, 2026.
The talented player had only recently joined Katsina United from Kano Pillars FC and was eagerly preparing to embark on a new chapter in his football career. His sudden death, reportedly due to a medical emergency on the pitch, has left the football community in shock and grief.
Expressing his deep sorrow, Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, described Ozor’s passing as a devastating loss for both the state and Nigerian football. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed, the Governor said, “The sudden death of Ozor Chinedu is deeply shocking and heartbreaking. It is particularly painful that a young footballer with such a promising career has lost his life at this time.”
Governor Radda conveyed heartfelt condolences to Ozor’s family, Katsina United FC, his teammates, coaches, management, supporters, his former club Kano Pillars FC, and the wider Nigerian football community, noting that the tragedy has cast a pall over the state and the sport at large.
