Despite a petition filed by his lawyer on Thursday (July 17), Meek Mill remains in jail following his three to six month sentence. In the motion filed, the MMG rapper’s representative argues that his client was wrongfully taken into custody because he had not commit any new offenses and was not given a hearing to state his defense. The judge has responded that a hearing will not be possible until September, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Last week (July 11), a Philly judge dropped the hammer on Meek Mill with his sentence. Pointing to the rapper missing probation appointments and posting to his social networks, Meek was taken into police custody. He was also ordered to serve another five years of probation.
Also included in the petition for early release was a letter from his parent label Atlantic Records, which states that his jail time is detrimental to his upcoming album release, a schedule Rick Ross has vowed to try and keep.
“If the artist is unable to promote his album release, thousands of fans will be disappointed and potentially turn their interest to other artists,” the letter said, “which could prove devastating to this artist’s career and damaging to those who have worked and hoped to continue working with him over the course of that career.”
Meek Mill’s Dreams Worth More Than Money album is slated to drop on Sept. 9.
