Nollywood actor Damilola Ogunsi has thrown his weight behind a proposed social media regulation bill, arguing that unchecked online discourse is harming society.
Speaking on News Central TV, Ogunsi criticized bloggers and influencers for spreading misinformation and shaping public perception in negative ways.
“We’ve turned society into something else. Many bloggers are just pushing nonsense. People now use social media lingo in real-life conversations, and their views are guided by whatever they see online,” he said.
While acknowledging free speech, the actor pointed out that some countries have successfully regulated social media for the public good.
“Look at Turkey—they’re extreme, but in Dubai, they do it for the benefit of society,” he noted.
Ogunsi also called for stricter accountability, taking aim at bloggers who operate without consequences.
“Bloggers sit at home and say, ‘Come and beat me.’ Well, this is the year we should actually be doing that. No consequences, and society is going crazy,” he added.
The debate on social media regulation in Nigeria continues, with opinions sharply divided on how much control should be imposed.
