Amid rising security concerns across the Southwest, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has activated multiple layers of the state’s security architecture to safeguard schools and communities.
In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, Governor Adeleke explained that the new strategy unites formal security agencies with grassroots paramilitary groups and local hunters, forming a coordinated defense against banditry.
“In recent days, I have held extensive consultations with stakeholders statewide, both formal and informal, to strengthen our collective preparedness against emerging threats. We began at the grassroots—engaging hunters, the OPC, Agbekoya, Amotekun, and community-based security groups. Today, we expanded these efforts through a State Security Council meeting with service commanders. Every layer of our security network is now activated and coordinated,” Adeleke stated.
He emphasized that securing schools, communities, and residents is non-negotiable, highlighting the deployment of intelligence gathering, strategic collaboration, and coordinated action across the state.
Recognizing the importance of traditional intelligence networks, Adeleke revealed he has personally reached out to the Osun State Traditional Council of Obas, through the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi. “Our traditional rulers are not only custodians of our culture; they are the eyes and ears of their communities and vital partners in ensuring local security,” he wrote, adding that meetings with all traditional rulers in Osun will be convened soon.
Governor Adeleke urged residents to remain vigilant and support ongoing security efforts. “To the good people of Osun: we are watching, we are working, and we will not relent. If you see something, say something,” he appealed.
This heightened security mobilization follows a wave of bandit attacks in the Southwest, including the May 15 incident in Oyo State, where armed bandits invaded three schools in Oriire Local Government Area, abducting dozens of pupils and teachers, and killing a mathematics teacher in captivity.
