The Nigeria Police Force said its Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) has commenced sitting to review pending disciplinary matters against 167 senior police officers over alleged breaches of professional conduct and other related offences.
This was revealed in a statement by the spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force, Okon Placid.
The trial of the senior officers followed increasing reports of extortions, maltreatment and abuse of fundamental rights of citizens by policemen across the country.
Young Nigerians have especially flooded the internet with videos of police officer forcing them to transfer money to them from their accounts, forcibly checking their phones and other devises and threatening them with bodily harm, including death if they refused to comply.
Many of the lower rank officers seen in the videos have been subjected to the police disciplinary process.
However, Placid said the Force Disciplinary Committee is responsible for the review and determination of cases involving senior officers of the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police and above.
According to his statement, the process ensures a thorough, transparent, and fair examination of all matters in accordance with extant laws and regulations, with appropriate recommendations to the Police Service Commission.
He added that the sitting of the Committee currently underway at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen internal accountability, enforce discipline, and uphold professional standards across the Nigeria Police Force.
