Ruben Semedo arrested in Greece for allegedly raping a minor

Olympiacos centre-back Ruben Semedo was reportedly arrested on Monday in Greece for the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl last Saturday.

The former Villarreal and Huesca defender was detained at his home in Athens after a young woman reported him to the Greek police.

According Greek media, the young woman met Semedo at a bar in Athens and that after consuming alcohol together, they went to his house, where he allegedly raped her.

The Portugal international, who wasn’t included in the national team’s squad for Euro 2020 by coach Fernando Santos, is expected to appear before the prosecutor on Monday.

Prison in Spain

In the past, Semedo was imprisoned in Spain for 142 days for kidnapping and assaulting a man at his home in Valencia.

The player was tried on charges of illegal detention, injuries, robbery and illegal possession of weapons and confessed in the trial to having threatened to cut off the man’s finger over a debt of 5,000 euros.

In 2020, the Valencia Court lowered the sentence imposed on Semedo from ten years in prison to five and the Portuguese was released and banned from entering Spain for eight years.

This summer, the Olympiacos defender came close to signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the Premier League didn’t sanction the transfer to be made due to his criminal record.
