President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he is extending the ceasefire with Iran to allow more time for negotiations, while maintaining the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.
In a social media post, Trump stated that the ceasefire would remain in effect until Iran presents a proposal to resolve the conflict. However, he ordered US forces to continue enforcing the blockade.
The announcement came just hours before the original ceasefire was set to expire.
Meanwhile, the White House said that Vice President JD Vance would not travel to Pakistan for a second round of expected peace talks. The trip to Pakistan will not be happening today. Any further updates on in-person meetings will be announced by the White House, an official said in a statement.
Trump attributed the delay in further negotiations to internal divisions within Iran and noted that Pakistani leaders had urged him to extend the truce.
Given the serious divisions within Iran’s government—and at the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan—we have agreed to pause our actions against Iran until their leaders can present a unified proposal, Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Despite the ceasefire extension, Trump emphasized that the naval blockade of Iran’s ports in the Strait of Hormuz will continue and that the US military remains fully prepared.
The ceasefire, he said, will last until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other.
