Beats by Dre is capitalizing on the global hype for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Today, the audio giant released a star studded five minute short called “The Game Before The Game” to push their revamped Solo2 headphones. The commercial begins with Brazilian star Neymar Jr. talking to his father before a big match. Then, cameras shift to several other soccer players prepping for big games in their own unique ways. Audiences see soccer stars from countries like Great Britain, Mexico, and the Netherlands as they complete their own quirky pre-game rituals.
American athletes Serena Williams and LeBron James each make cameos as well as rappers Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Wayne. Nicki fawns over a magazine featuring Neymar Jr. as Wayne throws on an iced out soccer ball chain. The clip’s background music is even an international affair. British rock ‘n roller Jamie N Commons and the American alt band X Ambassadors teamed up for the song “Jungle” which provide’s the backdrop.
Audiences are treated to a tour of Brazil, the tournament’s host country, before the end of the segment. Viewers watch as locals send up prayers at churches, home altars, and even bars. The short culminates with Neymar Jr. edging towards the light at the end of the stadium tunnel as his father leaves him with some final words. “Put God’s army in front of you. Wear God’s armor, from the helmet to the sandals. Go with God. God bless you.”, says Neymar Sr. as his son prepares to take the pitch.
