A suspect has been arrested and has reportedly confessed to stealing cash from several Super Falcons players at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco, just days before Nigeria’s opening match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The suspect is expected to return all stolen funds, with criminal proceedings to follow.
The theft occurred on the final day of the team’s training camp in Casablanca, before the Super Falcons relocated to Rabat for their Group C matches. Nigeria had opened their WAFCON 2026 camp on July 15 in Mohammedia, a coastal Moroccan city, before moving to Rabat on Saturday, where they will be based throughout the group stage.
Midfielder Esther Okoronkwo revealed on social media that she, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade were among the players who had cash stolen from their hotel rooms. Okoronkwo reported that over $1,000 was stolen and criticized the hotel staff for their lack of response, alleging that staff members became disrespectful when the theft was reported. She also cautioned the public against patronizing the hotel.
Following the players’ public complaints, Nigerian journalist and former Super Eagles media officer Colin Udoh announced that the case had seen significant progress. “I have been informed that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the theft at the Super Falcons’ Marriott Hotel in Casablanca and has confessed. Full restitution will be made to the players while the law takes its course,” Udoh posted on Sunday.
