Courtois ruled out of potential Atlético-Chelsea tie

Atlético de Madrid are eagerly awaiting the results of tomorrow’sChampions League semi-final draw, which could pit the ‘Rojiblancos’ against Real, Bayern or Chelsea. However, a clash against the Blues would leave Thibaut Courtois feeling blue, as a clause prevents him from facing Mourinho’s side. After MARCA exclusively broke the story, theAtléticopresident, Enrique Cerezo, has confirmed the news. Since he remains on Chelsea’s books, a condition in Courtois’ contract means that Atleti would have to fork out big money -3 million euros per leg, or 6 million in total- for the Belgian to face his parent club.
“It’s a sum we can’t pay”, the Atleti supremo told Onda Cero and Radio MARCA’s ‘Al Primer Toque’ show.
Though Courtois did square off against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup two years ago, this was because the clause in question was only inserted into his new Atlético loan deal last summer.
