Jamie Carragher has called on incoming Liverpool manager Arne Slot to bench Trent Alexander-Arnold for the rest of the season, despite the defender scoring a crucial late winner in Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Leicester City.
Carragher’s argument? It’s time to prioritize the future, especially with Alexander-Arnold reportedly set to join Real Madrid when his contract expires this summer. He believes rising star Conor Bradley should be handed the reins at right-back to gain valuable experience ahead of the club’s next chapter.
“If Trent hasn’t committed to the manager for next season, he shouldn’t be starting games,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “Bradley needs to know now if he’s the man for next season or not.”
Carragher praised Alexander-Arnold’s “unique” creativity, comparing his passing range to Kevin De Bruyne, but admitted that his defensive flaws and uncertain future make it necessary to begin Liverpool’s tactical evolution immediately.
Micah Richards disagreed, suggesting Trent deserves a proper send-off for his years of service and impact at the club.
Despite the debate, Liverpool are within touching distance of the Premier League title. They now sit 13 points clear of Arsenal with just five matches left. If Arsenal drop points against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, the Reds could be crowned champions without kicking a ball.
Otherwise, all eyes will be on Anfield next weekend, where Liverpool could seal the title at home against Spurs possibly with or without Trent in the starting XI.
