Despite ASUU strike, Benue varsity directs ALL staff to resume Sept 28

The authorities of the Benue State University (BSU) have directed all staff of the institution to resume their duties on Wednesday, September 28.

The directive was issued in a statement by Mfaga Modom, BSU’s registrar, on Tuesday.

“On the directive of the Vice-Chancellor, I write all staff, members of the university community, and the general public that the university will reopen with effects from Wednesday, September 28,” the statement reads in part.

All staff of the university are hereby expected to resume regular duties from Wednesday, September 28.”

The statement added that “a resumption date for students of all categories would be announced in due course.”

The directive comes at about the same time when Ekiti State University (EKSU) resumed full academic activities.

The development is also coming on the back of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 to press home their demands for improved funding for universities, and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.

Several meetings between the union and the federal government have ended in deadlock.

Last Wednesday, the national industrial court in Abuja ordered members of the union to resume work after the federal government challenged the strike.

Polycarp Hamman, the judge, said the striking lecturers should return to the classroom pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

ASUU has since gone before the court of appeal to challenge the industrial court’s ruling.
