Djokovic retains Wimbledon crown for 20th Grand Slam title

Novak Djokovic has won his 20th Grand Slam, overcoming Matteo Berrettini in the final of Wimbledon by a scoreline of 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. After dropping the first set, the Serbian roared back to win his third Grand Slam of the year, pulling him level with the 20 held by Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

This is his sixth win at Wimbledon and his third in a row, having lifted the trophy in England in 2018, 2019 and now 2021, after the event wasn’t held last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

One more Grand Slam victory will see him move ahead of Nadal and Federer to become the player with the most in history. Given that eight of his Grand Slams have come after his 30th birthday, few would put this past the 34-year-old.

Berrettini, the seventh seed, was heavily backed by the crowd, but couldn’t build on his lead after winning the first set in a tiebreak.

Winning Wimbledon was always the biggest dream for me when I was a kid,” the world number one said after the match.

“I was a seven-year-old boy in Serbia, constructing a Wimbledon trophy with improvised materials, and now I’m standing here with a sixth real trophy. It is incredible. It is amazing.”
