Roy Keane hasn’t lost his bite on or off the pitch. The fiery former Manchester United captain reignited his long-running feud with Alan Shearer in classic Keano fashion, dropping a cheeky jab at the ex-Newcastle striker during a Sky Sports segment on Sunday.
Before United’s humbling 4-1 loss to Newcastle, Keane was shown throwback footage of his infamous 2001 red card at St. James’ Park when he launched a ball at Shearer and appeared to lash out. Reflecting on the incident, Keane offered a dry but hilarious explanation:
“People annoy me! Do you know what, I think I got fined two weeks’ wages for that. I’m still annoyed with Wes [Brown] for that own goal at the end. The referee didn’t help.”
Asked whether St. James’ Park was a particularly hostile ground, Keane didn’t miss a beat:
“People used to annoy me.”
Former Newcastle forward Les Ferdinand couldn’t resist stirring the pot, joking that it was “just one person” who really got under Keane’s skin.
Keane’s response? Classic.
“One in particular, yeah and he still annoys me,” he said with a laugh, clearly referencing Shearer, who’s now a fellow pundit.
The two Premier League legends may be off the pitch, but their rivalry clearly lives on in the studio.
Meanwhile, both of their former clubs have crucial fixtures ahead. Manchester United travel to Lyon for a Europa League quarter-final second leg (tied 2-2), while Newcastle prepare to host Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
